It’s true, we’re going a little orange crazy right now. This is simple and delicious smoothie recipe. Similar to an Orange Juilius or a Morir Soñando (“to die dreaming”), but instead of using frozen concentrate or orange juice. It uses whole peeled seedless oranges. We prefer the taste and appreciate the added fiber that whole oranges contribute, and generally leave out the sugar. One serving has almost a full day’s allowance of vitamin C.
Makes about 2 12 fl oz servings.
2 medium sized seedless oranges. Don’t worry if your oranges have a few seeds. They will be almost unnoticeable once they go through the blender.
1 cup ice
1/2 cup whole milk. Note: You can substitute this for cream or non-dairy milk or cream or yogurt, e.g., nut, coconut, hemp, oat, etc.
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
2 tsp cane sugar or sweetener of your choice (optional)
- Peel the oranges. Using a paring knife, cut the top and bottom of each orange off to barely expose the fruit. Put one of the cut ends flat on a cutting board, and from the top of the fruit, remove approximately 1/2 inch strips of peel by cutting around the circumference of the fruit to expose the flesh of the fruit while removing the pith and peel. When you’re finished it should look something like the orange pictured above.
- Place the peeled oranges in the bottom of the blender and then add the ice and optional ingredients.
- Blend until smooth, serve and enjoy.
